このたびCONCEPT SPACEは、1982年の発足以来、45年目を迎えようとしております。これまでに242回にわたる企画展を開催し、欧州を中心に高い評価をいただいてまいりました。

発足当初より、「ミニマルアート」と「コンセプトアート」に焦点を定め、国内外の優れたアーティストを招聘するとともに、典型的な日本の長屋式アパートをそのまま活かした特徴的かつユニークな展示空間において、時代とともに多様な展覧会を展開してきております。

また、「住まうこと」「制作すること」「発表すること」「企画すること」という四つのキーワードを同一の場で実践し、日本において早い時期からアーティスト・イン・レジデンス（滞在制作）の試みを実現しております。

このたびCONCEPT SPACEでは、８年ぶりとなる個展を開催いたします。タイトルは

　　　「話」と「噺」のはなし ー “笑う故郷”

これまで「悪党の良識」「行方不明の日本人」といったサブタイトルによって提示してきた問い——固有の文化を持つ日本人とは何者なのか、どこから来てどこへ向かうのか。文化人類学的視座から浮かび上がる、日本人を“ストレンジ・ピープル”と捉える海外からのまなざし。「話」をすることの意味、「噺」に託される言葉の背後に潜む日本人の感性、そして映画『笑う故郷（The Distinguished Citizen）』を通して見えてくるアートシーンとアートワールドの差異——。

本展は、こうした問いをあらためて見つめ直しながら、「シンプル」でありながら「ベスト」とは何か、その作品の在り処を探る試みでもあります。

CONCEPT SPACE is about to celebrate its 45th anniversary since its founding in 1982. To date, we have held 242 exhibitions, receiving high acclaim, particularly in Europe.

From its inception, we have focused on "minimal art" and "concept art," inviting outstanding artists from Japan and abroad. We have developed diverse exhibitions in our distinctive and unique exhibition space, which utilizes a typical Japanese row house apartment building, adapting to the changing times.

Furthermore, we have put into practice four keywords—"living," "creating," "presenting," and "planning"—in the same space, and have been one of the earliest pioneers of artist-in-residence programs in Japan.

CONCEPT SPACE is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition in 8 years. The title is:

A story about "hanashi" and “banashi”　The Distinguished Citizen

This exhibition explores the questions previously raised with subtitles such as "The Common Sense of Villains" and "Missing Japanese"—who are the Japanese people, who possess a unique culture? Where do they come from, and where are they going? This exhibition explores the perspective from abroad that views the Japanese as "strange people," as seen through the lens of cultural anthropology. It examines the meaning of "storytelling," the Japanese sensibility hidden behind the words entrusted to "narratives," and the differences between the art scene and the art world as seen through the film *The Distinguished Citizen*.

This exhibition re-examines these questions, while also attempting to explore what constitutes "simple" yet "best," and the place of such works.

補足：　「話」と「噺」のはなし　　A story about "hanashi" and “banashi"

　 「話」と「噺」はなし「はなし」と「ばなし」についての物語

　　　　 ＊辞書によると、「話（はなし）」は一般的に会話や対話を指すのに対し、

　　　　　「噺（ばなし）」は物語や話、つまり「物語を語る行為」を指します。

「噺」という漢字は、「口」の部首と「新」の字から成り立っており、

　　 　 そのため、聞き手を斬新で独創的な話し方で楽しませるという意味合い

　　　　　 を持つと言われています。
