この度、CONCEPT SPACEとAisでは、イギリス美術のひとつの潮流を紹介する「英国美術の方法」展を開催する運びとなりました。
CONCEPT SPACEは、１９８２年の発足当初から日本とイギリス、スコットランドの美術交流を独自に進めてまいりました。これまでに、ロジャー アックリングを中心に、リチャード ロング、ハーミッシュ フルトンなど、イギリス自然派の３人のアーティストを紹介し、日本の侘び寂びの精神構造との対比と、そこから導き出される互いのナショナリティやエキゾチズムの共通性と差異を検証してきています。ロジャー アックリングは、没後１０年にあたる昨年から、イギリス各地で大きな巡回展を開催し、未だに冷めやらぬアーティストとしての評価は益々賞賛されています。CONCEPT SPACEに於いてはこれまでに２３回の個展やグループ展を開催し、多くの美術愛好家の支持を受けています。
日本において馴染み深いヘンリー ムアやアンソニー カロのイギリス彫刻と、次代を担うアーティストとしてイギリス自然派以降の新しい美術が１９８０年代に評価され、１９８４年には東京都美術館等で開催された「今日のイギリス美術」展が、その画期的なキャリアによって大きな功績を残しました。
今回、CONCEPT SPACE、R2とAis Galleryの３つ会場では、１９７０年代から活動をはじめた同世代の３人のアーティストの未発表作品を交えた構成で紹介いたします。
ロジャー アックリングは、流木に太陽光線を刻印する”Sun Drawing”を生涯制作してきました。アトリエ内で制作される作品から、一歩屋外に踏み出し、自然の中で太陽光を刻印された小さな木の断片は、「１日に４つの季節がある」と言われる”貴重な太陽光”そのものを視覚化した行為に昇華したとも言えるでしょう。
今回の展示では、１９７０年の最初期から２０１４年の最晩年のSun Drawingをセレクトして展示致します。
アラン ジョンストンは、鉛筆のグラファイトを紙や壁面に直接”Drawing”するシンプルな行為性から、最小の材料とシンプルな行為性によって生まれるミニマルで神聖な作品によってスコットランドを代表するアーティストのひとりとして評価されてきました。テートモダンの食堂天井の大きなウォールドローイングの仕事は、モノクロームの静寂な空間の中で、不思議な空気の揺らぎにも似た彫刻の様相を提供しています。１９７０年代から度々訪れた日本の中でも、特に古典美術に対する造詣は、日本庭園の枯山水との相互性にスコットランドのストーンヘンジの神秘性をもって、自身の作品スタイルの確立に大きく継承しているようです。今回は、小さな画面に施される白黒のストイシズムを提供します。
トレヴァ サットンは、チェルシー美術学校において、ロジャー アックリングの交友から興味を示した日本の特徴的な色彩を作品に取り入れてきています。一方、世界各地のナショナリティ豊かな色彩の印象は、シンプルでありながら豊かなカラーフィールドペインティングとしてイギリス国内で高い評価があります。
今回の展示では、新しく制作されたシーズ「桂離宮」から、その印象をさまざまなリサーチと歴史的背景に導かれながらナチュラルに彩られた小さな作品に集約されました。Aisの黒い鉄板の壁面との調和は、桂離宮の書院の静寂さを再現しているようです。

今回の「イギリス美術の方法」展は、Part 1,Part 2の２つの会期によって旧新の作品の入れ替えを行い国内未発表作品の紹介を致します。

CONCEPT SPACE and Ais are pleased to announce the holding of the exhibition "Methods of British Art," which introduces a trend in British art.
CONCEPT SPACE has been independently promoting art exchange between Japan, the UK, and Scotland since its inception in 1982. To date, we have introduced three British naturalist artists, including Roger Ackling, Richard Long, and Hamish Fulton, and have examined the contrast with the Japanese mental structure of wabi-sabi, and the commonalities and differences in nationality and exoticism that can be derived from this. Since last year, 10 years after his death, Roger Ackling has held a large traveling exhibition around the UK, and his reputation as an artist whose popularity is still fresh is increasingly being praised. CONCEPT SPACE has held 23 solo and group exhibitions to date, and has received support from many art lovers.
In the 1980s, he was recognized for his British sculptures by Henry Moore and Anthony Caro, who are well known in Japan, and for his new art after the British Naturalist movement, which he is known for as a leading artist of the next generation. In 1984, the exhibition "British Art Today" was held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and other venues, and he made a great achievement through his groundbreaking career.
This time, at the three venues of CONCEPT SPACE, R2 and Ais Gallery, we will be introducing a composition that includes unpublished works by three artists of the same generation who began their activities in the 1970s.
Roger Ackling has been creating "Sun Drawings" throughout his life, imprinting sunlight on driftwood. From works created in the studio, he has taken a step outside and imprinted sunlight on small pieces of wood in nature, which can be said to be a visualization of the "precious sunlight" itself, which is said to have four seasons in a day.
This exhibition will feature a selection of Sun Drawings from his early days in 1970 to his final years in 2014.
Alan Johnston has been recognized as one of Scotland's leading artists for his minimalist and sacred works, which are born from the simple act of "drawing" graphite pencil directly on paper or walls, using minimal materials and simple actions. His large wall drawing on the ceiling of the dining room at Tate Modern offers a sculptural aspect resembling a mysterious fluctuation of air in a monochrome, silent space. He has visited Japan many times since the 1970s, and his knowledge of classical art in particular seems to have been greatly inherited in the establishment of his own style of work, with the mutuality of Japanese dry landscape gardens and the mysticism of Scotland's Stonehenge. This time, he offers a black and white stoicism on a small screen.
Trevor Sutton has been incorporating the distinctive colors of Japan into his works, which he became interested in through his friendship with Roger Ackling at Chelsea School of Art. On the other hand, his impressions of national colors from all over the world are highly regarded in the UK as simple yet rich color field paintings.
In this exhibition, the newly created series "Katsura Imperial Villa" has been condensed into small, naturally colored works, guided by various research and historical background. The harmony with the black iron wall of Ais seems to reproduce the tranquility of the Shoin study of Katsura Imperial Villa.

This "Methods of British Art" exhibition will be held in two periods, Part 1 and Part 2, and will alternate old and new works, introducing works that have not been shown in Japan.
Starting with Ais Gallery, we will introduce three venues.
